Ephraim leaves the council building, and makes his way through Demlas to the main barracks for the city’s ground forces. He’s looking to organize patrols into the surrounding wilds and discuss the possibility of setting up forward operations outside the walls.

Resonator technology in miniature is incredibly difficult to make, and the vehicle you used for your first expedition remains the only one. Components are needed- and there is a site to the west away from presumed cult operations where you might be able to strip some out. Alternatively, you could take the shorter journey east to see if anything remains after the null-breach, to strip what you can from the ruined resonator

Ephraim decides to head west in order to expand their situational awareness and avoid further entanglements with the cultists until the city is in a better position.

THe same vehicle is assigned to your expedition, and you have five empty spaces on the vehicle to fill with chosen help

Ephraim looks to bring a medic, scout, and at least one person to operate the equipment needed to extract the material needed. Any extra seats will be people to fill out the watches.

Cathal and his companion from the last venture out of the city arrive to where they heard an expedition was gathering. Cathal checks the address again on a scrap of paper, but jams it into his pocket when he sees the vehicle.

Ephraim stands on the roof of the vehicle, directing the crew on loading. When he spots Cathal and his companion, Ephraim waves and jumps down. “Cathal! Nice to have you two coming along.”

Cathal waves back eagerly. "Hello Ephraim! It's good to be with you again. Hopefully our expedition is less bothersome than the last one, but I've no doubt we'll be able to handle whatever's thrown our way!"

"Cian'll hop in front, he'll keep us steady on the road... Hopefully! I have to say, I'm pretty excited for what we might find out here."

“Good! I was worried I’d have to drive and I never bothered with taking the learner’s test. Figured, what’s the point when we can’t even leave the city?”

Around you, the last few packages of supplies are being loaded and secured and the team checks off the final few items from the inventory

"Any expectations for out here? Anything you're hoping for other than the research materials?"

“I want to see what’s out in the world after all this time. We saw that bird thing last expedition, and it obviously has to sustain itself on something, so hopefully there are other weird animals out here.”

The vehicle is assembled, and the goods are stowed. Other explorers begin hopping aboard and making themselves comfortable for the long drive west

Cathal nods, "The wildlife will surely be interesting. The people too. We know now there's survivors out there, but hopefully there's more, and hopefully they're not so keen on destroying us." As they set off, Cathal tries to make himself comfortable, clumsily fumbling with the laser pistol strapped to his side to get it out of his way.

“Not being destroyed by everything we meet would be an improvement over the last expedition.” Ephraim settles into the shotgun seat, scanning ahead as they roll along.

Moving west into the countryside, you depart with less fanfare than last time though the destination is equally important. Enough materials have been packed away where a resonator can be repaired if found. The vehicle moves into a forested region where the lower branches are the only things visible among the all encompassing fog. The leaves are a riot of colors, bright fall tones and earthy textures

“Do you remember all this fog before the null breaches happened? I wonder if it will clear out as we expand our pockets of normal space.”

"It did when we fixed it at the east settlement for a minute or two there" Cian says, settling into a comfortable driving position

"I miss looking at the stars," Ephraim says to no one in particular.

Cian begins to slow the car around mid-day, as the fog gets much thicker. Even through the windows, the howls of some sort of creature out in the woods carries distantly

"The stars... I'd love to see the stars again. I'd love to see our planet become as beautiful as it once was. I don't think it'll be the same kind of beauty, but surely we'll build something new."

"Did any of you hear that? " Cian asks, looking furtively through the foggy windshield, the car still slow

Something dark, and large, but this time with legs and not wings passes by on the game run ahead, stopping briefly to trumpet, before moving onwards into the woods

“Why does everything have to be so damn terrifying looking here?” Ephraim pulls back the charging handle on his rifle and settles it in a position where he can bring it to bear if needed.

Cian is unable to get off the main road onto the game path, and is forced to stay here, and behind you the lanky, gigantic form of the creature nearby can be seen in the fog.

Its eyes briefly glow blue, before it bounds away

Cathal tenses up, looking back at the creature as it leaves and they drive on. "That was... Unsettling. Better keep that gun at the ready. Do you mind if connect us with my magic? It'll give us the upper hand if that thing comes back and turns out nasty."

Ephraim’s hands tighten around the weapon, “Go ahead. Any advantage we can get.”

Cathal nods and reaches out with his mind to feel, and connect with, Ephraim. When the connection is made, he relaxes slightly, keeping an eye out for any more creatures.

The drive for the remainder of the day remains in fog, though without rain and without any more run ins with wildlife larger than birds. The birds at least look normal. Evening comes with you about halfway to your destination, and the group is not able to find anything significant like the cave you used last time around off the road

Cathal peers into the dark before settling back into his seat. "We could stop and chance sleeping in the car? Or we could swap driver and keep going, save Cian getting too tired. I'll tell you now though, I'm not much of a driver."

“Neither am I, and I don’t fancy breaking the truck in the middle of the night. Let’s camp out and leave early in the morning.”

The stability field integrity is at 95%, and you'll be able to go about 15m or so from the truck before passing through the barrier it generates. The fog is thick around the edges of it, and the night darkness makes it feel even more like an enclosing bubble. The smoky mist coils around it, but does not pass through.

"I'll take first watch if you want to get some sleep. Wouldn't feel safe asleep out here without someone keeping lookout."

“That’s prudent. I’ll take the midnight watch then, and we’ll have our colleagues cover the last bit.”

A shadow passes over camp come morning, as a few rainbow feathers drift down through the trees, landing near camp within the stability field. One of them has singed material around the edges, and the menacing caw of the large bird shakes the ground, before it moves back off to the west

Ephraim stands beside the vehicle, staring in the direction of the bird call. Eventually he walks over to collect some of the discarded feathers. “Do you think it’s the same one?” He asks.

"Laser burns on the feathers. Gotta be, I think" cian says, turning it over in his hands several times

"Wonder if it holds a grudge," Ephraim says wryly. "You all ready to keep moving?"

"It could remember us, birds can be smart like that. I'm ready to go, I'd rather not hang around." Cathal watches the sky warily as he gets his things together and reenters the vehicle.

You should be at your destination by late afternoon, and the vehicle is out of the forested zone before long- now transitioning to light trees across a yellowed grassland. This floating island is a massive one, more of a floating continent- the reasons for which were a research project dating back to long before The Scream. There is no signs of life amid the grasslands, though the bird swings low overhead again before turning east, and moving behind the foggy horizon. A small farmstead seen through the cleared stability field area passes by on the right, and looks abandoned

“Want to check it out?” Ephraim gestures at the farmstead.

Cathal finally stops worriedly watching the sky when the farmstead comes into view. "I wouldn't mind actually. You never know what you could find out!"

The farmstead is a barn, a farm home, and the remains of a grain silo where the side has been blown open by some sort of force

Glancing at the silo and deciding it's not worth thinking about, Cathal makes his way into the home. "I'd love to see what kind of people lived here, I wonder how things ended for them..."

"Hopefully quickly if they were out here when everything came crashing down." Ephraim slings his rifle, drawing his pistol and moving to open the door.

Cathal stays behind Ephraim. "Maybe they got away safely... Or maybe they survived somehow..." He trails off as he talks, as if even he doesn't believe what he's saying.

The front door is closed, but not locked from how it appears. The windows are misted over with the gray/brown film that seems to coat everything that sits inside the null regions for too long, almost like the color has been bleached from it

“Hmm,” he says in response. His focus is on the door, and he raps his knuckles against the door jam; making sure to keep himself and Cathal from standing directly in front of it. (edited)

Nothing explodes or otherwise signifies any kind of trap might be in place here, and the jam appears solid.

“Ready?” Ephraim mouths, hand on the doorknob.

The door opens gently to reveal a parlor with a sitting room, kitchen and rear living room. They are decayed far beyond what the last few years would otherwise suggest

Cathal carefully steps through the door, and slowly makes his way into the kitchen to see if anything survived the decay.

For some reason, the fruit is fresh and ripe sitting in a bowl on the table, but the rest of the kitchen has an advanced form of decay spreading through it, as though its been out here unattended for decades rather than just a few years at the most. There are no signs of pests or other creatures that might be inhabiting an empty structure like this

Cathal picks up an apple in wonder, and turns to show it to Ephraim like a magician doing a trick. Speechless, he squeezes into the fruit and pulls it apart into two pieces to look at the inside.

The inside remains pristine, and ripe. There are no worms within it

"This is incredible stuff... Look at this." Cathal throws one half of the apple to Ephraim, and begins to pocket some of the other pieces of fruit, leaving some behind in the bowl.

Ephraim catches the Apple half. He turns it over in his hand, “This is weird. Like something out of a fairy tale.” He moves towards the living room, looking for any bedrooms that might give a clue as to who lived here.

The master bedroom door is closed but not locked, and inside you find two skeletons in bed, though they too seem to be going through some kind of greatly altered decay cycle. The mark of the fraternity is on the wall, slashed into the wallpaper, and darkened with ink from broken pens from the room's writing desk.

Cathal's eyes linger on the bodies with a look of sadness, and his frown deepens when he sees the fraternity mark. Wordlessly, he moves to the desk to see if anything survived like the fruit.

a small book has been left behind on the desk, perhaps deliberately. "Descent Into Nothing" by Dr. Alec Winterlight is still visible on the front though the gold leaf title card is fading and flaking

Ephraim looks over Cathal’s shoulder at the book, “Name ring any bells?”

Dr. Winterlight was studying Null Breaches, and other time dilating phenomena native to Saliv before the time of The Scream. He vanished around that time, presumed killed with Dremlas was in chaos.

Cathal nods as he carefully picks up the book, opening the first pages delicately. "He studied the Null Breaches, but around the time of the Scream he died, or at least disappeared. This book could be very useful to us."

“Let’s bag it in. Weird that it was left here when it seems like Gamma and his ilk have been through already. Wonder if it’s full of knowledge they already know.”

"It could be. That's a worrying thought, but at least it means we're catching up to them."

Outside, Cian beeps the vehicle's horn. Once, twice, and then a very long beep before it is cut short

“Shit,” Ephraim hisses, “Let’s go.” He moves quickly to the side of the house looking out towards the vehicle. Ephraim searches for a window to peer through before charging out the door.

The vehicle appears fine but two figures have stepped out of the storm, pointing laser rifles at the vehicle. Cian is slumped over the steering wheel, it’s hard to tell if he’s knocked out or dead

Ephraim whispers to Cathal, “And here I was hoping we’d make it to the quarry without seeing these guys again. If we’re not quick, they’ll make it to the vehicle and we’re screwed if they shut down the resonator.”

Cathal curses under his breath. "How many of them are there? Is our planet infested with these bastards? Lead the way, I can't shoot too well, but I have your back."

“We should try to take one of the belts intact. I don’t have enough time to set up a shot, so it’s going to be messier than I’d like to take them.” (Would you like initiative before I shoot? Not too keen on talking to them as it seems like they’ve already harmed Cian.)

Ephraim nods to Cathal and steps out of the homestead. He levels the revolver at the pair, and the script along the drum fades into a midnight black. The weapon bucks in his hand three times, every shot silent and without other indication it’d be fired. (2 shots at rightmost. 1 shot at left.) (15/12, 20/10 at right.) (12/10 at left) (All Silenced rune shots. Any hits won’t make any noise but I’m sure they’ll notice each other being shot lol)

Both of the foe are killed in the time it takes for the cartridges to be ejected from the gun. sensing the end of their users life, the portable resonance belts self destruct, shorting themselves out with a spectacular blue micro fireball

Seeing the cultists go down, Cathal scrambles out from the building towards the car to check on Cian.

Ephraim curses under his breath and moves to secure the downed enemies. So much for saving the belts.

Cian is alive but barely, shot twice through the chest. His head hitting the steering wheel is what alerted you to the foes at all. The form of the belts is still apparent despite their inner workings being destroyed. As of yet , it’s more than IA has to go on

He hurriedly removes the belts from the downed enemies before moving back to the vehicle.

Cian is breathing and does not need to be stabilized but he’s going to need rest for a few days for his body to Begin the long work of healing properly

Cathal carries him out of the driver's seat and moves him to the back seat. "He should be ok. That was some good shooting, shame about the belts, but I've no doubt we'll meet more of these bastards, at least we know to take them alive. Will we keep going?"

Ephraim considers, “I’m worried about being slowed and at risk because of his injuries. On the other hand, the city could really use some new material for the resonator. I suppose we should keep going.”

Cathal nods and climbs into the driver's seat. "I'll drive so if there's bother you can still shoot. We aren't returning to the city as failures again."

After he helps Cian get situated in the back, Ephraim climbs into the front passenger seat. He lays his SMG across his lap and says, “Damn straight. Let’s get on with it.”

Passing the cabin with the book and portable resonator examples in tow, you push on through the dark woods, and by nightfall hit a clearing ahead where the trees are in a perfect ring around the outside

“Let’s stop here for the night. I’m not keen on pushing through overnight.”

"I agree. I don't want to push our luck too much. Same as last night, I'll take first watch?"

“No sense in ruining a good thing. Wake me up in a few hours.”

"Sure will." Cathal spends his his watch keeping an eye for any more cultists or creatures in the woods, and making sure Cian is getting good rest.

Night passes with no further encounters. The belts glow dimly once the sunlight goes down, enough to find if lost in a thicket, but not enough to see by. There are no issues with wildlife,a nd by morning you emerge ready to contine your trip. you're expected to be there by mid day

Ephraim stretches, attempting to shake the night's chill off. He lets Cathal and Cian know that he's ready whenever they are.

Cathal rubs the sleep from his eyes and eats a quick breakfast in the driver's seat. When everyone's ready, he sets off down the road.

Moving down the road, the forest turns into a clearing, where three windmills near the borders of the gaseous sea turn in an almost imperceptible breeze. These once provided power and water to the few small farms here- in addition to being places where flour could be milled or logs cut into boards by connecting different tools to the windmills crankshaft. They are silent, and have fallen into disrepair now. Only one is still gently spinning on tattered cloth sails

“At least they’re still here. Which means we might only need to fix them rather build completely over again once we make the area safe again.”

Cian is doing a bit better in the back seat, breathing heavily now rather than shallowly “Did we want to...check it out?” He rasps, taking a long drink of water afterward

"Look at these... Think of those who worked here, I wonder have they left anything behind them, I think we should stop."

Ephraim nods, his own curiosity stirred by the abandoned structures. Once the vehicle stops, he hops down cradling his SMG. He hands Cian the long rifle, “If they try to kill you, you kill ‘em right back this time.”

He nods weakly, his couch like back seat groaning gently as he shifts positions in the chair

"We won't be too long, don't worry." Cathal tries to reassure Cian as he hops out of the vehicle and makes his way towards the windmills.

Ephraim let’s Cathal take the lead. He follows behind and to the side, scanning the area around the windmills.

The first windmill you come to is the smallest. The brick work looks acceptable and safe,and the door gently bangs on a frame that has aged far beyond a few years due to null exposure

Cathal pushes the door open and looks in from the outside unsure what to expect.

Casks of ale, now finely aged and bags of ground flour that still look good litter the bottom floor of the windmill, with a ladder heading up into the mechanics room where the actual gears would be situated. The cool interior of this building has allowed the goods to be kept viable

Ephraim sticks his head into the structure beside Cathal. He’s mildly surprised to find the goods in such condition. “We should definitely take these with us. It’s crazy they’re still untouched.”

"Absolutely! The cult must never have been here, I can't imagine they'd leave all this stuff lying around. It's strange that any of this has survived at all... A bit like the fruit..." Cathal enters the windmills and starts carrying bags of flour back to the vehicle.

Ephraim assists, trying to speed the process up so they’re not caught in the open for too long.

The goods are loaded within an hours time and a few sips of the drink and cian feeling in better spirits at least. He might need another day or two before he’s able to drive

The door is wooden but otherwise sturdy

Ephraim slams the butt of his SMG against the chain in an attempt to break it off the door.

The chain rattles and pulls away. A dozens sacks are inside of picked fruit, still looking mostly good to eat. Some of it might become banana bread if you can make it back to town fast enough

Cathal's eyes light up, "This is amazing! Let's load as much as we can up quickly and have a look into the last windmill."

“Null-breaches are weird. I wonder why they spare the fruit but not humans.”

Ephraim hurriedly gathers an armful of sacks to bring back to the truck.

The truck is loaded almost to capacity, and as you approach the third windmill, there is something like falling stone or toppling machinery inside, and dust begins spilling out from under the opening door

Ephesus abruptly stops, holding a hand out to gesture for Cathal to do the same. “Something might be inside,” he whispers, “Let’s see if we can find a window or breach in the wall to look in from before opening the door.”

Cathal keeps his mouth shut and gives Ephraim a thumbs up, then gestures at him to lead the way.

There is a window just off the ground. Boosting up into it you can see that the machinery has toppled over inside, but there’s no evidence of anyone being here. The null field outside the zone of stability cast by your vehicle seems turbulent right now

"I think there's something out there... Could be whatever was in here."

“Could be. I’m not sure if we could fit any of those pieces of machinery in the truck anyways, especially if we need space for anything we find at our destination. Want to back up to the truck? Better cover and one more gun back that way.”

"Agreed, let's get moving. No point getting in another fight of we can avoid it. I'm not sure which I'd prefer it to be, Cultists or scary wildlife."

Ephraim starts backing towards the truck, splitting his attention between the turbulence and where he’s walking, “I wouldn’t mind some nice wildlife at some point. Like a magically mutated bunny or something.”

The truck is fine, and Cian has a bit of color in his cheeks again as you begin turning things over. You suspect he might have filled his canteen with a bit of one of the casks when nobody was looking, but if a few sips of spirits helps take away from having two new holes in your chest, it seems like an offense you can overlook. You drive for another few hours before the ruins of the village in question appear ahead of you in the smog, complete with inactive resonator

When the resonator comes into view, Ephraim says, “I wonder if we should have brought a resonator specialist with us.”

The plans from your first attempt are still in the glove compartment of the vehicle, Cian points out breathlessly.

“That’s fortuitous. Let’s roll in then.” Ephraim is sitting up straight, SMG cradled in his arms.

Cathal parks the truck close to the resonator and grabs the plans. He hops out and has a look around him before walking onward. "We'll figure it out surely, like we did the last time. Hopefully it doesn't completely end up like last time though..."

(I think with the check going well last time and it only being a few days ago, we don't need another set of checks since everyone knows what they're doing. It's just time, now)

(Let’s park the truck near the resonator and we can take turns with one of us working and the other taking watch since we’re a man down. It’ll probably take longer but erring on the side of caution.)

By nightfall, the resonator is ready, all you need to do is ignite it from the control box set into its base

You're both feeling tired but more accomplished after a long night of work. Cian presses the control lever down at the base of the resonator and a thunderclap knocks you onto your back. The mist in a 10km sphere vanishes, roiling and forced outward like a tidal surge pushed on by the ocean. Color and sunlight begins returning to the area and trees gnarled and hunched over by the accelerated passage of time begin righting themselves. Flocks of birds head skyward and you can hear the migrations of larger beasts that need the null zones to survive leaving the area. Above, the large bird you have seen a few times now wheels once,outside the 10km high bubble, and the tiny spec you can see begins heading north, away from the area

Ephraim grips the ground as he lays there. With effort, he fights the sudden vertigo from watching the safe zone expand to the 10km in all directions. After a long moment of forcing his gorge down, he moves unsteadily to his feet. “Holy hell, it didn’t do that last time.”
